Growing your own backyard vegetable garden is a rewarding endeavor. It offers delicious homegrown food, exercise, and a sense of empowerment while navigating challenges.
With the relentless heat wave sizzling and torrential rains pounding between the heat wave breaks, the Veggie-Bed has taken a beating. The potato beds are soggy and giving way to a Japanese beetle infestation, tomato plants have stopped fruit set, and the watermelon is struggling to hold its own. And if that is not enough to discourage any gardener, the weeds have gone rampant.
However, all is not lost; the pole beans are climbing, the okra is taking off, and the cucumbers are producing. With a little luck and care, the tomatoes and watermelons will bounce back. Of course, this is contingent on us not getting blasted by a hurricane.
Now, back to the question of whether it’s worth it. Financially speaking, we break a little better than not. As for emotional and health aspects, it is absolutely hands down worth every penny. There is something extremely rewarding about seeing a plant produce food, no matter the quantity. Planting a seed, nurturing it, and watching it grow and yield a bounty is almost spiritual.
Here at the Veggie-Bed, when we face challenges, we use them as motivation to keep on growing.
