A fun experiment to help you see seeds germinate!
Experiment: Watching Seeds Wake Up!
What you need:
Clear plastic bags (like sandwich bags)
Paper towels
Water
Seeds (bean or pea seeds work well because they grow fast!)
Magnifying glass (optional)
Marker
Notebook or paper for drawing and writing
Steps:
Get your seed beds ready: Dampen a paper towel, but don’t make it soaking wet. Place it inside a plastic bag. You can fold the paper towel so it fits nicely in the bag.
Plant your seeds: Put a few seeds on the damp paper towel inside the bag. Make sure they are spread out a little bit.
Give them a home: Seal the plastic bag, but leave a little opening for air to get in. You can tape the bag to a sunny window, like the Scholastic website suggests. Or, you can put it in a warm place, like the Chicago Botanic Garden suggests.
Watch them grow! Check on your seeds every day.
Do they look different?
Are they getting bigger?
Can you see a little root or shoot peeking out?
Draw pictures and write down what you see in your notebook. Use your magnifying glass to look closer.
Keep it moist: If the paper towel starts to dry out, you can mist it with a spray bottle.
Celebrate growth! When your seed has grown a little root and shoot, you can plant it in soil. Give it water and watch it keep growing!
Think about:
What did the seeds look like before they started growing?
How long did it take for the first root to appear?
What colors do you see as the plant grows?
What do you think the seed needed to start growing?
This experiment helps you see the amazing process of germination, where a tiny seed wakes up and starts its journey to become a plant!
